Our travel editor reviews the iconic, nautical themed Grand harbour in Southampton,
the cruise capital of the UK
The Tower Hotel is part of the Guoman company who have an exclusive collection of hotels in central London. The Tower Hotel is a 4 star luxury hotel boasting a perfect location at the heart of London, surrounded by centuries of history and outstanding architecture. The hotel’s ideal location allows you to take in the unique breathtaking views of two of London’s most iconic landmarks and World Heritage Sites – Tower Bridge and The Tower of London as well as providing panoramic views of the River Thames and St Katharine’s Docks. The Tower Hotel is also conveniently situated near South Bank, the City, the O2 Arena, Canary Wharf and ExCel and with excellent transport links getting out and about from The Tower Hotel is no problem at all.
THE HOTEL’S FACILITIES
The Tower Hotel prides itself on having an outstanding level of customer service, and certainly for me they ticked all the right boxes! The Hotel caters for every individual need and preference; with nothing being too much trouble! There’s a wide range of superb facilities ranging from state of the art gym facilities to exclusive relaxing lounges. Every room at The Tower is designed to reflect the building’s individual architecture, style and character. There’s an abundance of natural light and I found the hotel to be vibrant and contemporary.
All rooms are spacious with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, Egyptian cotton bed-linen and wireless broadband internet access. Room service is also available 24 hours a day. You will also find a range of finishing touches in your room to make your stay just that little bit more luxurious! I had a Premier Executive room for my stay and this gave me exclusive access to the Executive Lounge on the 5th floor. Here I was able to relax to the backdrop of magnificent views surrounding the hotel with complimentary beverages, snacks and pastries available throughout the day along with complimentary Wi-Fi and daily newspapers and private check in and out.
RESTAURANT AND BAR
When staying in London why look any further than your hotel for dinner, especially when it’s of the standard offered by The Tower! I had dinner at The Brasserie Restaurant and had a truly superb dining experience! The Brasserie is a modern, welcoming restaurant with great food and excellent service whilst you continue to enjoy the sensational views of this part of London. The Brasserie is Guoman’s flagship restaurant and the menu reflects the diverse culinary influences of their head chef and his team. With its relaxed atmosphere and informal dress code, The Brasserie was an excellent choice. Next to The Brasserie is the Xi Bar & Lounge and this is a perfect place to relax. With a wide selection of light snacks, beers, wines and cocktails, this was an oasis of calm in busy London!
All too soon my weekend city break was over. I had a wonderful time made all the more perfect by the friendly and professional team at The Tower Hotel. You can book a break for two at The Tower from £109 per night including breakfast and VAT. Have a look at their website for more information and to see more photos and a video tour.

Whether you’re considering a winter break or next year’s holiday in the sun - Tenerife has it all!
Our travel journalist, Jenna Powell, fills us in on just some of the many sights and attractions you can find in Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, find out more ......
With Tenerife boasting glorious sunshine, beautiful beaches, magnificent views, superb hotels, UNESCO World Heritage sights, and an excellent choice of restaurants and bars it is no wonder that it attracts hundreds of holidaymakers every year; all year round!
Tenerife is a perfect holiday destination for a family; and for couples too! There is an ideal combination of things to do on the island, with something for everyone! Whether you are looking for a more relaxed holiday in the sunshine, or a family friendly resort packed full of natural beauty and exciting activities and attractions, then Tenerife is certainly the right place to head to!
SOME OF THE THINGS TO SEE & DO IN TENERIFE
Whilst every corner of the island is worthwhile exploring, here are a few attractions within Tenerife which may interest you…
When visiting Tenerife, a visit to Tenerife’s most iconic landmark; Mount Teide, should be at the top of your list. The Teide National Park surrounds the legendary volcano and is perfectly located within the centre of the island. As the park is the only subtropical alpine area in Europe, it is home to a number of species which are unique to the park; nature in all its splendour! !
Whilst visiting the National Park, make the most of the lookout points provided; allowing you to capture some of the spectacular views of the island on camera. On your trip, you will also be able to witness the fascinating phenomenon of the ‘sea of clouds’. When the gentle trade winds push the clouds up against the mountains they give rise to a sea of real beauty. On occasions this sea of clouds causes a fine and mysterious horizontal rain.
A visit to the capital of Tenerife; Santa Cruz, is a good day out. This dynamic city has great shopping, restaurants, hotels and loads more! To really explore the fascinating culture within Tenerife, you should also definitely consider a trip to the city La Laguna. Only a short distance from Santa Cruz, La Laguna offers a mix of unique historical monuments as well as boutique shops and a good selection of restaurants; I highly recommend you explore the Tapas within La Laguna!
Mount Teide National Park
If you fancy doing something a little bit more exhilarating during your trip, then a visit to Siam Park is for you. Siam park is a Thai-themed water park which caters for the whole family. If you want to bring out the thrill-seeker in you, then Siam Park is the place to do so with plenty of water slides and rides that will get your heart racing; particularly the infamous ‘Tower of Power’!
If, like me, you like your visit to a water park to be a little more relaxing, then Siam Park offers its own white sandy beach and lazy river circulating the park; perfect for an afternoon ‘siesta’! If you’re travelling with children, the Lost City; within Siam Park, is a fantastic water play area which will keep them entertained for hours!
WHALE WATCHING
Whale watching is another popular attraction within Tenerife as the south coast of the island is home to around 400 resident short-finned pilot whales and many bottlenose dolphins. The crystal clear waters mean that a whale watching boat trip is ideal from this island and is fun for all the family!
WHERE TO STAY IN TENERIFE
I decided to stay in the H10 Conquistador located in Playa de Las Americas; and what a good choice this was! Located perfectly within Playa de Las Americas, this 4* hotel was exactly what I had hoped for during my stay in Tenerife; and more!
With a beautiful pool, spa, gym, café, pool bar, a la carte restaurant and marbled flooring throughout, this hotel was an excellent choice! It was clean, comfortable and modern with the choice of magnificent sea views provided from the comfort of your own balcony! The hotel offered a wide range of facilities for you to enjoy during your stay and the excellent service provided by the hotel staff gave it the finishing touch!
With Tenerife only being a four hour flight from the UK, you could be in the glorious Tenerife sunshine in no time! I really can’t recommend this Island enough as a perfect holiday destination; an Island I will certainly be revisiting!

Shakespeare Country - The Heart of England
Stratford-upon-Avon is a picturesque town beautifully situated on the River
Avon with a wealth of black and white timber framed buildings. There’s so
much to see and do here on a short break. This was my first time in
Stratford-upon-Avon and I found that a great way to get the layout and
feel of the place was on the open top City Sightseeing bus which I joined at
the Pen and Parchment Inn at the end of the High Street.
Attractions
This is of course the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the world’s greatest playwright, and a lot of the attractions are focused on his life. You can visit and stroll around the house where he was born and grew up and where he spent the first five years with his new wife. There’s Nash’s House and New Place where Shakespeare died in 1616, and Hall’s Croft, an elegant 17th Century house where his eldest daughter Susanna lived with her husband Dr John Hall. Anne Hathaway’s Cottage is another popular tourist attraction – a beautiful thatched farmhouse where Shakespeare’s wife once lived, and any reference to Stratford-upon-Avon wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company and the magnificent 1030 seat Courtyard Theatre.
On The River
After exploring the town centre with its good selection of shops, restaurants and tea rooms it’s well worth seeing Stratford-upon-Avon from the river. There are regular cruise boats available where you can experience a 45 minute relaxing trip with a tour guide on board You’ll find a lot more information on the area by visiting the website

The Menzies Welcombe Hotel Spa and Golf Club
I stayed at the Welcombe Hotel for my visit and to be honest I can’t rate this hotel highly
enough. Luxury 4 star accommodation offering some of the finest leisure facilities in the heart of England.
This hotel is ideal for a short leisure break, perfectly located for the Shakespeare connections, the
beautiful Warwickshire countryside and the Cotswolds close by.
The hotel itself is a magnificent Jacobean style country house which still retains many of its historical
features from when it was built in 1866. With 157 acres of beautiful parkland around the hotel the
gardens and views are outstanding. The hotel is rightly acknowledged as one of the leading country house
hotels in the heart of England.
There are 78 luxurious bedrooms ranging from the contemporary air conditioned garden rooms with iMac’s and flat screen TV’s, to the stunning four poster rooms and suites, many of which are furnished with 19th century antiques and oil paintings.
Exquisite Dining
There’s an impressive oak-panelled lounge with inviting sofas and a grand open fireplace and here you can
simply relax or perhaps, like me, enjoy a stylish afternoon tea. The lounge leads into the hotel’s award
winning a la carte restaurant with its breathtaking views over the beautiful Italian gardens and water features
Because of the layout and design of this ornate restaurant, all tables benefit from the light and view.
INFORMATION
Prices vary at the hotel with Standard rooms starting from £112 to £215 per night. Executive rooms range
from £152 to £255 per night. Suites which include a lounge go from £172 and £275 per room per night and

LITTLE PADDOCK IN
THE NEW FOREST IS BELOW!
The New Forest in Southern England is a wonderful National Park, with heathland, pasture and forest. David Powell, our travel editor, discovers some of the many attractions this unique area has to offer, including the ponies, Beaulieu, Exbury and Little Paddock
Our travel editor, David Powell, highlights some of the treasures you can find on a short break in the New Forest ...
Introduction
The New Forest is undoubtedly one of the treasures of Southern England. This unique area, with picturesque villages, bustling market towns and winding country lanes, is a perfect and relaxing environment for a short break. William the Conqueror created the New Forest as a deer hunting area in 1079 and today the 219 square miles of National Park is made up of a well cared for mixture of forest, pasture and heathland.
The environmental impact of tourism has to be carefully balanced and the whole
forest has a 40 mph speed limit with lots of designated car parking areas. Subsequently a car journey through the New Forest becomes a delightful, stress-free, animal spotting drive with plenty of opportunities to see the famous ponies at close quarters and perhaps a few deer. As you would imagine, the New Forest is a paradise for walkers and cyclists alike with miles of splendid walks and traffic free cycle routes. This area has many attractions including award-winning gardens, museums and historic houses. More information on things to see and do here is available at www.thenewforest.co.uk
Beaulieu
Not only is Beaulieu a charming village, it is of course home to the famous National Motor Museum founded by the present Lord Montagu. It had been far too long since I last visited and I was looking forward to spending the day at one of the UK’s leading tourist attractions where over 350,000 visitors pass through the gates every year. The Beaulieu Estate includes the Palace House and Gardens and Beaulieu Abbey. The Palace House has magnificent rooms and history comes alive with Victorian costumed guides giving an insight into the workings of a Victorian household.
After a trip on the high level Monorail around the grounds and a ride on the replica 1912 London bus, I was keen to view the treasures of the National Motor Museum. There are over 250 cars on show, from the early vintage models, family cars of the 30’s and 40’s, through to classic cars of the 70’s and 80’s. Historic F1 and rally cars and Donald Campbell’s Bluebird are all on show. All the vehicles are in a fabulous condition, even down to Del Boy’s faithful 3 wheeler and the flying Ford Anglia seen in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I was amazed to come across a couple of ‘bubble cars’ and even an orange on wheels! There’s now also two great exhibitions - James Bond, with genuine cars from some of the films and World of Top Gear, not to be missed!
Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway
Exbury and Lepe are situated on the south-east fringe of the New Forest and Exbury is dominated by the world famous gardens created in the 1920’s by Lionel de Rothschild. My visit to Exbury Gardens started with the beautiful 2 mile drive called Summer Lane and I was able to pull in a couple of times to look at the ponies and admire the views.
Exbury is a spectacular woodland garden with a famous collection of rhododendron’s, azaleas, camellias, rare trees and plants. Also on site is a plant centre, gift shop and tea rooms with plenty of free parking. I must say, for me the steam train was the highlight of my visit. A fantastic ride through the gardens in immaculate carriages pulled by a wonderfully preserved locomotive - great fun! You can see the train on my video review on www.ashford247.co.uk.
Little Paddock
My short break was made complete with a stay at an exclusive, luxurious getaway at the edge of the New Forest near Ringwood. Owned and run by Brett and Sue Jones, Little Paddock is a perfect location for a well earned break or special occasion. Brett and Sue’s attention to detail and customer service is amazing. Sue told me that they have many guests returning year after year and after experiencing a short break here myself I could easily appreciate why.
Little Paddock is essentially made up of three accommodation components. There’s the award winning 4 star bed and breakfast, the 4 star luxury self-catering woodland lodges and the entirely separate Caravan CL site. Near the lodges and main house there’s a heated swimming pool, sauna, hot tub and short tennis court available.
Woodland Lodges. The stunning woodland lodges are uniquely hidden within their own little glen. They are exclusively for adults and sleep two. Each lodge has been carefully designed internally by Brett and Sue to a high standard and have been given lovely names such as ‘Forget Me Not’, ‘Mistletoe Mansion’, ‘Bramble Lodge’ and the ever popular ‘Love In The Mist’. Lodges have all mod-cons including WiFi, wet rooms, comfortable bedrooms, lounge/diners and a fully equipped kitchen. With adequate heating provided they can also be booked during the winter months for a romantic break away. I found the private Village Green tucked away to the rear of ‘Honeysuckle Lodge’ provided with a BBQ and garden seating. I also came across a small deer who looked at me for a brief moment before heading off into the nearby woodland, wonderful!
Bed and Breakfast. The B&B accommodation consists of 3 luxurious bedrooms available for guests with each room having a seasonal theme to the décor. My room was called Autumn - peaceful, relaxing with en-suite, bedroom and comfortable separate lounge area. I had seen the Visit England Breakfast Award plaque near the newly refurbished lounge area and couldn’t wait to try a full English! I wasn’t disappointed, with Sue’s homemade bread on the side, the
breakfast was in a class of its own!
The New Forest’s picturesque villages and wonderful scenery left me with memories of a special atmosphere and a sense of timelessness ...
not to mention of course Brett’s breakfast!
